Why it’s important to raise awareness

One of the things I have been most proud about in myself is accepting who I am and how to support myself better after finding out I am a woman with autism.

Doing this fundraiser for Aspect is something I am interested in doing so I can help raise awareness to the lack of resources that are currently available for people on the spectrum, specifically young girls who get misdiagnosed or dismissed early in life during the transformative years in school, where they are left to struggle without the proper support and resources they need in order to succeed academically and socially.

I want to raise awareness about the impact this can have on people who do not stereotypically match the same characteristics as a young boy on the spectrum. Currently, young boys are diagnosed four times more than girls, who end up getting diagnosed later in life.

Each individual on the spectrum can display differently to one another that differ to the standard “look” for autism but that does not make them any less autistic.

I’m running this October for the 1 in 40 Australians on the autism spectrum.

I’m running 20km this October to raise funds for the estimated 1 in 40 Australians on the autism spectrum!

Increased awareness and understanding means more people than ever are being diagnosed as Autistic – connecting more people to the support they need to thrive throughout their lives. But it also means services are being stretched further than ever before - with many children left on long wait lists at critical times in their development.

I have joined Run for autism to raise funds so more Autistic Australians can access the life-changing assessments, autism-specific education, specialist therapies and adult community services they need to create their own unique brilliance!

Any contribution, large or small, will help create a more inclusive future for Australia’s Autistic community.

Thank you so much!
