I’m running 60km this October to raise funds for the estimated 1 in 40 Australians on the autism spectrum!
Increased awareness and understanding means more people than ever are being diagnosed as Autistic – connecting more people to the support they need to thrive throughout their lives. But it also means services are being stretched further than ever before - with many children left on long wait lists at critical times in their development.
Our middle child Nate has Autism-2 and ADHD-C. We always knew something was different about him, but never knew it could be Autism. Having him assessed, and subsequently diagnosed, has helped everybody around him understand him better, and ensured he was getting the right professional help too. However, the whole process from initial psychiatry appointment, to receiving his 40 page diagnostic report, required months of psychological assessment and almost $4,000 out of pocket. This was after a years long wait to be seen. Having a child go through neurodivergence assessment isn't covered by medicare or private health, and so many families simply cannot afford it.
I have joined Run for autism to raise funds so more Autistic Australians can access the life-changing assessments, autism-specific education, specialist therapies and adult community services they need to create their own unique brilliance.
Any contribution, large or small, will help create a more inclusive future for Australia’s Autistic community.
