Why I have chosen to Run for Autism
Hi! I have decided to participate in Run for Autism this October to help play a part in raising vital funds for Australians affected by Autism for additional supports such as life-changing assessments, education, specialist therapies etc whilst awareness and understanding.Â
Autism is a very personal subject of mine. I was born 3 months prematurely and as a result had significant developmental delays in my early childhood years, which often led to me requiring additional supports particularly in my child care and early schooling years. Fast forward over 30 years later I have been blessed with two beautiful children, Archer and Charlotte who along with my partner Chantelle are my world.Â
Our son Archer was also diagnosed with Autism last year following some concerns about his development and has resulted in seeking additional therapies and support just to name a few. Whilst I am extremely happy to say that he has since made some incredible strides in his progress since his diagnosis, there are moments of time that are often more challenging than others especially since he remains non-verbal.Â
Autism is a lifelong developmental condition with characteristics including difficulty in social interaction, communication, repetitive behaviours and sensory activities.
Unfortunately Autism is not something that can be grown out of, and each person diagnosed with Autism has varying strengths and challenges. Some diagnoses can be more noticeable than others.Â
Increasing awareness and understanding means more people than ever are being diagnosed as Autistic – connecting more people to the support they need to thrive throughout their lives. But it also means services are being stretched further than ever before - with many children left on long wait lists at critical times in their early developmental years.
With your contribution, no matter how large or small, will help create a more inclusive future for Australia’s current and future Autistic community.Â
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post! Wish me luck for October!
